Meet the co-founders & community builders
Sophisticated Events is the combined vision of Miami, Florida born and raised world travelers, husband and wife power duo, Maritza and Flip Aguilera. After visiting the Springs many times while dating, they knew that this is where they wanted to establish roots and make a difference. When Maritza and Flip finally decided to call Colorado Springs home in July 2020, they felt there was a void in quality entertainment that brought the community together in fun, meaningful, and engaging ways. Eight short months later, they started Memoirs, true stories, unfiltered. Two months after that, Nerd Nite COS, and the ball has been rolling ever since.

Co-FounderFlip was born into a musical family. His Cuban dad played percussion in a funk-rock band in the 70s. His El Salvadorian mom, a member of a Christian musical church founded by salsa legends Richie Ray and Bobby Cruz of the renowned salsa pioneering label FANIA. Imagine being exposed and involved in the close-knit Miami salsa scene, alive with a deep-rooted cultural history and world-famous musicians and dancers at such a young age! He attended the oldest high school in Miami: Miami Senior High School, where the musical experience got even richer and played Latin percussion while traveling the nation as part of the prestigious Miami High jazz band, even being invited to the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland his senior year. Flip received a partial scholarship to the University of Miami to participate in their musical program. Later, Flip decided to pivot and began DJing at highly produced shows in the Miami and South Beach electronic music scene as well as elaborate house parties which then exposed him to a whole new world of upscale entertainment with a purpose.

Nerd Nite COS is a monthly event during which several local “nerds” give fun-yet-informative presentations while the audience drinks along and the hosts engage through games and trivia.
We all know that learning is more fun when you’re drinking with friends and colleagues. Thus, Nerd Nite is a monthly event held in more than 100 cities across the globe during which several folks give 15-minute fun-yet-informative presentations across all disciplines – while the audience drinks along.
It’s like the Discovery Channel… with beer! The drinking is just as important as the learning.
Imagine learning about everything from math feuds or the science of the Simpsons, to the genealogy of Godzilla or debunking beer myths, while having a few. Fun, right?!

Best of the west wing fest
What’s the best chicken wing in town? That’s the question we know many of you out there have.
Best of the West Wing Fest is meant to be a fun, community-building festival with something for everyone, kicking off the 2022 summer season where the community (not a panel of judges) gets to crown the best chicken wing in Colorado Springs.
Designed as an all-day affair, there will be local restaurants competing for the title of the best chicken wing in Colorado Springs, local musicians, clean comedians, and entertainment scheduled throughout the day.
